Venice Beach
Situated in the historic Presidents Row neighborhood, this California Bungalow residence blends seamlessly with its surroundings, paying homage to the original character of the home while enhancing its unique charm. The design preserves original elements wherever possible, thoughtfully selecting all new and modified components to fit in with the existing details.
In its original state, the home lacked a homely feel, with dark, compartmentalized spaces that created an unwelcoming environment. To remedy this, the layout was reconfigured to create a continuous, unbroken floor plan that encourages indoor and outdoor living. The traditional porches and patios were extended to provide ample outdoor living spaces, while doors and windows were expanded to flood the home with natural light.
The Kitchen and Family Room, the hub of the home, underwent the most significant changes. Intrusive walls that separated the programs were removed, creating a functional, bright space that previously was lacking. The uninterrupted circulation between the Kitchen, Dining Room, and Family Room maximizes the available natural light, creating a welcoming and inviting atmosphere.
The breakfast nook tucked into the Kitchen alcove provides views to the lush yard, while on the opposite side of the Family Room, a private office is housed behind sliding glass doors that allow for the space to be extended or kept private as needed.
Representing the laidback California lifestyle, this residence is a perfect space for hosting both friends and family. It promotes a functional living environment that doesn't sacrifice comfort or charm, while still respecting the original design of the home and its historic surroundings.
